My heroes, Elvis Costello, Graham Parker and Boo Hewerdine have all explored this rich and strangely untapped vein, the similarities between comedy and tragedy, and when humour turns cold. There's a fine line between laughing with, and laughing at, as intimated in the very last line of the song. In this story a best man speech is presented by an individual desperately in love with the bride who he believes he's lost forever. He imagines that the guests can see through his humour to the depth of his feelings and he hopes she can too. He considers why she chose his best friend over him and contemplates ruining everything by declaring his inner most emotions in a speech dripping with his own personal demons and devoid of humour 'for better or for worse'!
